Search engine optimisation is an important feature of any comprehensive web site promotion plan. Some estimates put it that around 85% to 90% of all Web site traffic comes from the major search engines. There is easily a direct correlation between a top ranking and an increase in traffic to your site, and also typically increased sales.

Search engine proponents would agree that the process of optimisation is both an art and a science. On the science part, it is the scientific process of understanding the algorithms and logic displayed by individual search engines, each with its own internal rules and processes. It is an art in that independent submissions to these engines require a process of experiential decision making. It involves finetuning and weighing keywords, their level of prominence and relevancy, timing, knowing what to avoid and what not to avoid, how to keep in the good graces of the major directories, the use of certain website techniques, meta tags, the length of a meta keyword, doorway pages, the list goes on .. and, of course, patience.

As there are over 300 search engines and a few hundred FFAs (free for all domains, i.e. domains that exchange links with one another) online, my recommendation is that we use a automated search engine/FFA submission engine to cover some ground, and manual submission to popular search engines and directories that may not be in the list, followed by optimisation techniques on the website. A consultancy fee will be charged, and we estimate two hours' effort @ SGD100 per hour per month, with a minimum of three months for an advanced package or an hour effort that covers automated submissions weekly only for a basic package. You can choose to renew the service at the end of three months if you are satisfied with our performance.

(Our effort is quantified by the number of hours rather than by use of various search techniques as these are too varied and a quotation based on costing per technique will not be useful. For such efforts to show a difference in ranking, we are looking at a time frame of at least three months. After the three months, we will have a review, and if the ranking has stabilized, it may necessitate a shorter period per week, depending on client requirements)
